The historic Newtown Theatre will hold “Your Worst Night Out Ever” on Friday, July 21 at 8 PM. The lowlight of the night will be a screening of “The Room,” which is widely considered the worst movie ever made.
Doors open at 7 PM and in the hour leading up to the movie guests will enjoy one complimentary drink (a selection of the world’s worst beer and worst wine), a shot bar of Jägermeister and Malört, treat bags filled with the world’s worst candy (think circus peanuts, black licorice, candy corn, etc), and free popcorn (the popcorn is pretty good, sorry). The hour will also include worst-themed trivia and other surprises.
Guests are encouraged to wear their worst date-night outfits. The worst outfit as voted on by attendees will win a great prize!
Online tickets for this 21-and-older special event are $30 or $25 for theatre members. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $40 per person.
About the Film
Rated R, “The Room” is a 2003 movie written, produced, and directed by Tommy Wiseau, who also stars as its main character, Johnny. Although the movie played for only two weeks in the summer of 2003, reportedly grossing a mere $1,900 in just two theaters, Wiseau continued to spend a reported $5,000 a week to bankroll a Hollywood billboard for the movie. This odd and exorbitant expense was one of many examples of apparent wastefulness that would come to fascinate fans of “The Room” and help earn Wiseau a reputation as “the Orson Welles of crap.”
But amid all the nonsense associated with “The Room” — its inexplicable $6 million production budget; its awkward sex scenes; its vanishing subplots and characters; its incoherent dialogue slurred by Wiseau’s thick, nebulously European accent — the everlasting billboard may have in fact evinced stealth marketing savvy. For by the time the billboard finally came down in 2008, a true Hollywood miracle had occurred: “The Room” had become a major cult hit.
